On the last day of term we had a very emotional day as we said goodbye to another group of our young people. We celebrated their many achievements whilst here at Lighthouse School and reflected on how far they have come already. We wish them well in their future as they move on to the next stage of their lives.

The sunshine came out and we all enjoyed an ice cream as we looked forward to the summer holidays. We wish everybody a lovely summer and look forward to seeing students new and current in September. ... See MoreSee Less

Lighthouse School held our first ever Inter-Schools Robotics Competition, designed and managed by Science staff and students and hosted by Leeds Beckett University.

We entered a Lighthouse Team and had a lot of fun taking part in the challenges. We owe a lot of thanks to students who helped find sponsors, design certificates, make leaderboards and helped tally all the scores on the day as well. It was a Lighthouse Team effort and really showed the dedication and innovation our students have, as well as their ambition to succeed in STEM and help others to achieve their goals too. We were joined on the day by John Smeaton Academy and East SILC. John Smeaton were overall winners on the day with East SILC winning Teamwork and Lighthouse winning Speed and Control and the Arena Challenge A huge thanks to our sponsors:Leeds Beckett UniversityCrossroads Truck and BusLGP PrintAsdaReedCareer TeachersEmpowering LearningRandstad UK ... During our topic on Light and Sound we used our Makey Makey kits to turn 3C students into a human piano.

By linking to the board one student could play different notes by tapping other students on the hand. Students thoroughly enjoyed this activity and took turns working cooperatively with each other to play the piano. ... See MoreSee Less

Lighthouse School recently hosted a vibrant and heartfelt Pride event, where students came together to celebrate Pride and our autistic LGBT+ community. This joyous occasion was marked by a dress-down day and a variety of engaging activities that showcased the school's spirit and inclusivity.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Tech Springboard for their engaging tester session with Key Stage 4 and 5. Their involvement added an exciting tech dimension to the event, sparking curiosity and interest among the students. The highlight of the morning was the P3 assembly, a fantastic celebration of the meaning of Pride. The assembly included a stall with information on mental health and LGBT+ support services, ensuring that students are aware of the resources available to them. The afternoon was equally vibrant, with a wide range of activities including Minecraft, Wii games, a tennis tournament and a relaxing session. A particularly memorable activity was the creation of a giant rainbow made from the handprints of all students, and staff symbolising unity and collective pride. As the day progressed, students took the opportunity to get glammed up in outfits, rainbow colours and glitter for the much-anticipated fashion show and parade. The event concluded with a delightful spread of cake and drinks, providing a sweet end to a truly fantastic day. The Pride event was a remarkable celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and community spirit. It was a day where every student could express their true selves, learn about the importance of Pride, and have fun together. ... See MoreSee Less

As part of their 'Big Bang!' science week, students in 3D and 3C welcomed Diane and Rhubarb from Prickly Pigs Hedgehog Rescue in Otley into school today.

The students had the most fantastic time learning all about how to care for hedgehogs and re-introduce them into the wild. They were absolutely thrilled to meet Rhubarb, a three-year-old rescue hedgehog who has got all muddled and lost his nocturnal habits, preferring to sunbathe instead! We can't thank the Prickly Pigs team enough for such an informative and exciting session and would like to show our appreciation by asking for any cat and dog food donations to be brought into school by Wednesday 17th July for us to take to the rescue hedgehogs currently being cared for at Prickly Pigs for their dinner! ... One of our parents took on the 'Yorkshire Dales Skyline Challenge' last week and walked 34 miles in 19.5 hours! Such an incredible achievement, especially given the recent warm weather and high temperatures we have experienced.

So far, over £1,200 has been raised for Lighthouse School and there is still time to donate. If you would like to donate, please visit:www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/jonathan-webster-1 ... See MoreSee Less
